Lindsey Vonn: Skiing star crashes at Alpine Skiing World Cup ahead of Milano Cortina Winter Olympics

Lindsey Vonn crashed in the final Alpine Skiing World Cup event before the Milano Cortina Winter Olympics.

Vonn lost control when landing off a jump in Friday's downhill race and ended up tangled in the safety nets, injuring her knee

The 41-year-old eventually got up after receiving medical attention and walked away gingerly, taking weight off her left knee and using her poles to steady herself. She then clicked her skis back on but stopped to check her left knee and was airlifted to hospital.

"I crashed today in ‌the Downhill race in Switzerland and injured my left knee. I am discussing the situation with my doctors and team and will continue to undergo further exams," Vonn wrote on Instagram.

"This is a very difficult outcome one week before the Olympics... but if there's one ‍thing I know how to do, it's a comeback. My Olympic dream is not over. Thank you for all of the love and support. I will give more information when I have it."

Vonn has been the circuit's leading downhiller this season, having returned last season after a partial right knee titanium replacement.

She is one of the favourites for the women's downhill at the Winter Olympics, which begins next Friday, but is a blow to her preparations.

Following Vonn's crash, race organisers decided to cancel the World Cup race in Switzerland amid increasing snowfall.
